Public notice W e advise that Mr Myles Holt is no longer registered as per the public register located at https://www.ahpra. gov.au/. Mr Holt can therefore no longer practice as a dentist or hold himself out to be a dentist. Several dentists have contacted this publication concerned that there is no information from AADFA on their seminars or who can now conduct them. On another related matter, DEAC has no regulatory authority and cannot determinetheCPDstatusofanyindividual, practitioner or dental course. e DEAC also cannot authorise accreditation of any individual, practitioner or dental course. It is not formally tasked by any recognised dental association or board to issue any accreditation. Mr Holt has been contacted for comment but hasn’t responded. u
A rk Health has announced its new sponsorship of the Australasian Osseointegration Society’s (AOS) NSW Branch. e collaboration marks the company’s continued commitment to enhancing its surgical product range while bolstering its support for oral surgery practitioners across Australia.
is sponsorship aligns with Ark Health’s mission to broaden its o ering in the dental surgery eld. By partnering with AOS NSW, Ark Health solidi es its dedication to propelling the eld of oral surgery forward. “Our sponsorship of the Australasian Osseointegration Society’s NSW Branch underlines our oral surgery aspirations,” saidNoah Shroot, theMarketingManager at Ark Health. “We’ve worked hard over the last few years to bring agship names such as EthOss Bone Regeneration and W&H into our surgical portfolio as we continue to help empower clinicians specialising in oral surgery.” u

Drop in waiting times for public dental care, but concerns remain over long-term access
W aiting times for public dental treatment dropped to an average 16.5months inDecember 2022 as a result of a one-o injection of funds, however concerns remain about ongoing access to dental care for more than 1.5 million eligible Victorians. “ ese are the lowest waiting times to access public dental care in Victoria since 2016/17, which comes o the back of ongoing advocacy from the ADAVB to increase funding,” said ADAVB President A/Prof Warren Shnider. “However, waiting more than 12 months is still unacceptable for patients with signi cant treatment needs.” e Victorian Government provided $27 million last year to target waiting lists after the delays in accessing care imposed by government restrictions, which had seen the waiting time blow out to 26.7 months in June 2022. is additional funding has helped to remove a large number of patients from the waiting list, but concerns remain about the ability of eligible patients to access care given the chronic underfunding of public dentistry. “History tells us that these one-o injections of cash only o er short term relief, and without a more sustainable approach, we know that waiting times will rapidly increase,” said A/Prof Shnider. Treatment activity appears to be returning to normal levels, with 205,516 people treated from June – December 2022 (including 124,766 adult patients). However, this is still only a small fraction of the 1.5 million adults who are eligible to access dental care. While people wait for dental care, their existing problems worsen and often lead to the need for emergency treatment. Over the past 6 months around one third of all courses of care in the public system were for emergencies rather than routine and preventive treatment. e data also highlights signi cant issues with the public dental workforce, with the number of clinicians declining by 21.6 FTE sta over the past 6 months, representing 6% of the workforce. “We have raised concerns during stalled enterprise bargaining negotiations last year about issues relating to recruitment and retention of dentists. It is vital that the Victorian Government addresses these
workforce issues as a matter of urgency to ensure that we have a strong public dental sector so that vulnerable Victorians can access necessary care.” Oral health is fundamental to overall health, wellbeing, and quality of life, and a healthy mouth enables people to eat, speak and socialise without pain, discomfort or embarrassment. Dental diseases lead to pain, discomfort and tooth loss, and can lead to di culties with chewing, swallowing and speech. Poor oral health can lead to problems with nutrition and general health, disruptions to sleep and productivity and can be a barrier to full participation in society including the ability to gain employment. ere are also links between poor oral health and general diseases including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. “It’s also important for people to prioritise their oral health,” said A/Prof Shnider. “If you have delayed your dental visit because of the pandemic, now is the time to make that appointment for a check up. And following a few key things at home – brushing twice a day with uoride toothpaste, cleaning in between teeth and reducing the amount of sugary foods and drinks can go a long way to keeping your smile healthy.” Average waiting times at selected clinics: Melbourne u North Richmond Community Health: 40.6 months 4.8 months u Merri Health: 29.6 months 16.2 months u Banyule Community Health: 25.8 months 7.5 months Regional Victoria u South West Healthcare: 33.5 months 0.7 months u Latrobe Community Health Service: 30.4 months 15.2 months u Sunraysia Community Health: 27.1 months 3.2 months ese numbers re ect the average waiting time for people as they come o the waiting list for care. u

e Bisco experience at Schaumburg
I llinois, Chicago is one of those milestone events in your life, never to be forgotten. In mid-July 2023, the team at Amalgadent Dental and one lucky Australian dentist, Dr Annie Tong, embarked on a learning adventure that would bond us forever. Flyingtwentyhours fromMelbourne,we arrived late Friday evening to a downpour in Chicago. Fortunately, it cleared up to a perfect Chicago summer day. We spent the Saturday and Sunday exploring the city before going to Schaumburg, the home of Bisco. Over the course of three days, we attended lectures and participated in physical laboratory testing of materials. ese sessions were conducted by: u e very humble Dr Byoung Suh, Founder and President of Bisco Dental products. u Dr Rolando Nunez, Director of Clinical A airs u Dr Erick Yu, Manager of Research and Development Technology u Dr Qiang Ma, Research Scientist u Dr Joseph Kim, Clinical Advisor We were rst greeted at the hotel by David Han, our most gracious and accommodating host. He was then followed by more of the Bisco family, Flemming Poulson, International Sales Manager and Terri from reception. ey all made us feel welcome and at home as we focused on the science behind the Bisco Dental product range. We learnt of the extensive science behind the customer service team. ey were able to eld every query with their vast knowledge in general and more speci cally the Bisco products range. Despite Rolando’s cowboy hat and rubber ducky shirt, Rolando could not disguise his professionalism and expertise
in the eld of Biomaterials and Research and Development. If anything, it further ampli ed his passion and die-hard belief in his work. He was at home and in his element sharing his knowledge and research ndings. Dr Suh also lectured us, more speci cally on the following topics: u About his new project, rewriting his Principals of Adhesion Dentistry. It will include the latest up to date technology and state of the art research. u Developing ethical, sound experiments in the lab. u e art of troubleshooting Zirconia bonding. u Breaking though the misconceptions of current adhesive protocols across the multitudes of substrates, whilst achieving biocompatibility e team approach demonstrated
David Han
between Dr Suh and his exemplary sta , constantly striving to “bridge thedisconnect between science and clinicians” was evident. We donned full PPE as we entered the lab. We were surrounded by high tech testing and experimental equipment. is gave us a fuller appreciation of the length of time it takes to “calibrate” the team for the utmost uniformity in testing. What astounded me the most was the dedication of everyone on the team. “If Dr Suh says do it again … you do it again. Over and over, again” said Dr Rolando amidst the high-tech equipment technology. Rolando emphasised core principles: “Respect and Honour. Believe that the data is valuable.” Over dinner we shared a never-ending menu, owing with beer and a Shandy or two. Dr Suh announced that the “Aussies were too loud,” whilst the Aussies declared the rowdy Venezuelan on the table was to blame. Many laughs were had and more

Over half of Australians haven’t visited a dentist in the past year u e latest research from Compare the Market found that, on average, Australians paid $271.68 out of pocket for their last dental appointment. u General dental is the most used health insurance extras inclusion, with 47.6% of policyholders stating it’s their most used extras service.
“An extras policy is a great way to save on many out-of-hospital services that Medicare typically does not pay a bene t for. With the cost-of-living climbing, it’s important to ensure you are getting great value out of your extras policy. If you are paying for services you don’t use, or not satis ed with your returns, then it’s time to wake up to waste and compare your options,” Ms Hambilton said. “Depending on your health fund and level of extras cover, you may even be entitled to have your teeth cleaned with no out-of-pocket costs by visiting an eligible dentist. “With Dental Health Week here, it’s a good reminder of how important it is to look after your oral hygiene. “Iwouldadvise anyonewhohasn’t been to the dentist in at least the past 12 months to bite the bullet and book themselves in a general check-up and a clean. A bright smile could do wonders for your health.” u
W ith Dental Health Week underway, it’s a timely reminder of the value we should be putting into our oral health, especially considering how much dental health can a ect our overall health. Yet despite many of us being told to brush and oss twice a day from a young age, as well as getting annual dental check-ups, recent research from Compare the Market shows over half of Australians (51.5%) surveyed haven’t visited the dentist in the past year. Following up on this initial nding, Compare the Market asked over 1,000 Australians aged 18 and over about their dental health and found that the average Australian spent $271.68 out of pocket for their last dental visit.* e survey data also revealed that 53.3% of those previous dental visits were for general check-ups with a scale and clean, while another 11.8% went in for simple llings. Spokesperson for Compare the Market, Chris Ford spoke about the importance of good dental hygiene and how bad dental health could contribute to poorer health overall. “It’s surprising to see that over half of Australians have not visited a dentist in the past year, given how much of our overall bodily health could be in uenced just by what’s going in our mouth, especially if you don’t keep your teeth and gums clean,” Mr Ford said. “From in ammation of the heart
linings to respiratory diseases, the risk of these illnesses could be heightened by bad oral hygiene. “And while theremay be a stigma of fear surrounding a visit to the dentist, people should have more to fear about not booking a visit to the dentist, as many of these ailments could be prevented or treated through early detection.” e survey data found that a third (32.7%) of respondents don’t have an extras policy. As for those who had an extras policy, general dental was the most used inclusion (47.6%), followed by optical (29.9%). Compare the Market’s Head of Health Insurance, Lana Hambilton, spoke about how a private health insurance policy with extras can contribute towards the cost of some out-of-hospital services that Medicare might not pay a bene t for.

Regular cleaning and lubrication reduce friction – the bogeyman of internal wear – extending the life of your tools and your bottom line.
A financial “green”: Investment in care Golfers know that investing in quality clubs pays o in better performance. Similarly, handpiece maintenance is a nancial investment in your practice. Ignoring it can lead to double bogeys – costly repairs and lost revenue due to downtime. On the ip side, routine maintenance keeps your nancial scorecard “in the green,” allowing you to focus on delivering exceptional patient care. Just as a skilled golfer knows a well-kept set of clubs is key to their game, well-maintained handpieces ensure your practice’s nancial health and operational e ciency. Patient safety: The ethical “fair play” In golf, following the rules is a matter of ethics. e same applies to dental
practice. Handpiece maintenance isn’t just a technicality; it’s an ethical obligation to patient safety. Just as golfers must maintain their equipment to keep it in top shape and enhance their game, dentists follow rigorous cleaning and sterilisation protocols. It’s not only a regulation but also a commitment to ensuring the well-being of patients, today and tomorrow. Innovation: navigating the green of progress Now, let’s dive into the world of innovation – the driving force of progress. Just as a golf pro’s swing re nes their game, the W&H Assistina Twin and Assistina One rede ne handpiece care. With their specialised spray nozzles, they artfully administer precise amounts of cleaning and lubrication solutions to each handpiece, executing

It’s akin to guiding your practice with the nesse of a seasoned golfer’s expert drive – centered on propelling your practice towards advancement with every interaction. Beyond mechanics: A hole-in-one practice In golf, every shot counts. Similarly, in den tistry, every instrument matters. Handpiece maintenance transcends mechanics; it’s a
re ection of your practice’s commitment to excellence. Patients recognise the care you put into maintenance, just as golfers appre ciate a well-kept course. It’s not just about tools; it’s about creating an environment of trust and professionalism. Mastering handpiece care: A swing towards dental triumph Imagine handpiece maintenance as your golf swing, a winning stroke that demands precision and consistency. Just as a golfer ne-tunes their swing,
prioritising maintenance showcases your dedication to craft and patients. Each well-maintained handpiece becomes a step toward practice success, a ticket to the excellence of the green. Charting a brighter future: Teeth whitening can be the key to dental practice resilience and growth
By Stephen Douglas
Stephen Douglas
I n today’s rapidly shifting Australian economic climate, most households need help to keep pace with the soaring cost of living. Consequently, dental practices aren’t exempt from this nancial strain. A striking 96%of dental practices have reported increased operational costs in the previous year. To add to this statistic, 86% anticipate confronting similar if not more severe, nancial pressures in the months ahead. It’s not just about rising expenses either. A signi cant 37% of dental practices have reported a noticeable drop in patient bookings. Moreover, nearly 39% anticipate a possible dip in their annual pro ts. In such a scenario, the impending question is – howdo dental practices navigate these economic challenges and ensure sustained growth? In this climate of adversity, progressive dental practices across the country are not just resting on their laurels. ey are on a relentless pursuit of ground breaking strategies to weather these challenges. So what’s the focus? Attract new clientele, expand their repertoire of services, and streamline their operations to ensure maximum e ciency. Teeth whitening has emerged as a beacon of hope amidst this backdrop. Projected to double its market size in the forthcoming half decade, this cosmetic procedure o ers practices an opportunity to cater to huge demand. However, beauty salons, spas, hairdressers, supermarkets, online pharmacies, illegal websites and products that do not whiten teeth currently enjoy this lucrative cosmetic treatment. It is a mistake. By strategically integrating a world-class teeth whitening team, dental practices stand to provide top-tier, e cient services, resulting in visibly radiant smiles and high patient satisfaction. A signi cant bene t of a patient agreeing to whiten their teeth is that this identi es a patient who cares about their smile. In time, they are more likely to be open to discussing higher-value cosmetic treatment plans.
Incorporating in-demand procedures such as teeth whitening bolsters the practice’s service suite and positively impacts pivotal KPIs. ere are numerous bene ts, such as enhanced patient satisfaction, improved treatment acceptance rates and increased patient retention. So what’s the bottom line? Inherently patient focused treatment plans, propelling signi cant revenue and consistent pro tability.
Yet, challenges remain. A recent survey revealed that 79% of dental practice managers cited two predominant hurdles: managing patient expectations and a discernible gap in clinical knowledge. ese challenges, while external, can hinder the growth trajectory of many practices. Is your practice feeling the pinch of these challenges? Drawing from extensive experience, encompassing over 600 practice visits and more than 2,000 strategic sessions, a trend has been observed. While generalising, many practices take a passive approach, often waiting for patients to initiate discussions on teeth whitening. If this resonates with you, there’s good news on the horizon. We have discovered a proven teeth whitening strategy and education program. is platform is suitable for all dental practices that can easily double, even triple, their whitening productivity, reduce clinical times, and produce more e ective results (with less sensitivity) without the normal frustrations practices and their patients su er from. Is it too good to be true? A global customer base across four continents with some of the best dentists in the world shows that our focus on education and support is a win-win for our clients. As a dental practice, if you are not starting at least 15 whitening cases a month, I can help you. u Join the revolution, and I can certainly promise a brighter future. Making the bone harvesting a handy procedure
Micross: a minimally invasive disposable device indicated for cortical bone harvesting. The excellent cutting performance, due to its outstanding micro-blade, allows for an easy collection of autologous bone, even in narrow and hard-to- reach areas. This harvesting technique warrants the best preservation of cell vitality of the cortical tissue, a fundamental characteristic for the best graft integration. The only instrument for the Tunnel harvesting technique Micross is the only bone harvesting device specifically studied for tunnel surgical techniques that minimise post operation discomfort. The external diameter of the cannula is 5mm and due to its particular shape the
instrument can be inserted in tissue tunnels in the intraoral area as the external oblique line, the cortical palatine and the zygomatic process.
Advantages of the disposable semicircular blade
• Maximum cutting efficiency • Collects cortical bone shavings of appropriate size and thickness for the graft integration • Excellent control during the harvesting procedure • Effective on any bone surface (plane, concave, convex) • No contamination due to the wear of the device By using Micross the bone tissue is directly collected in the chamber inside the cannula and it gets an excellent biological plasticity, because of the presence of coagulated blood. The volumising effect, due to the curly morphology of the collection reduces the quantity of bone needed to fill the defect and as a consequence it minimises invasiveness for the patient.

TheraBase Ca – Self Adhesive Calcium Releasing Base/Liner: TheraBase Ca is a dual-cure, calcium releasing, self adhesive base/liner. Utilising the THERA technology, TheraBase Ca chemically bonds to tooth structure, and releases and recharges calcium ions.* TheraBase Ca has high calcium ion release, generating an alkaline pH which promotes pulp vitality and will polymerise in deep restorations where light cannot reach. TheraBase Ca is stronger than other base materials, glass ionomers and resin-modified glass ionomers.* Additionally, it is radiopaque allowing for easy identification on radiographs, providing quick and effective diagnosis. TheraBase Ca Benefits: Releases calcium, self adhesive, high flexural strength, high compressive strength, contains MDP, easy to use, dual cured, alkaline pH, high degree of conversion and radiopaque.
