Drop in waiting times for public dental care, but concerns remain over long-term access

W aiting times for public dental treatment dropped to an average 16.5months inDecember 2022 as a result of a one-o injection of funds, however concerns remain about ongoing access to dental care for more than 1.5 million eligible Victorians. “ ese are the lowest waiting times to access public dental care in Victoria since 2016/17, which comes o the back of ongoing advocacy from the ADAVB to increase funding,” said ADAVB President A/Prof Warren Shnider. “However, waiting more than 12 months is still unacceptable for patients with signi cant treatment needs.” e Victorian Government provided $27 million last year to target waiting lists after the delays in accessing care imposed by government restrictions, which had seen the waiting time blow out to 26.7 months in June 2022. is additional funding has helped to remove a large number of patients from the waiting list, but concerns remain about the ability of eligible patients to access care given the chronic underfunding of public dentistry. “History tells us that these one-o injections of cash only o er short term relief, and without a more sustainable approach, we know that waiting times will rapidly increase,” said A/Prof Shnider. Treatment activity appears to be returning to normal levels, with 205,516 people treated from June – December 2022 (including 124,766 adult patients). However, this is still only a small fraction of the 1.5 million adults who are eligible to access dental care. While people wait for dental care, their existing problems worsen and often lead to the need for emergency treatment. Over the past 6 months around one third of all courses of care in the public system were for emergencies rather than routine and preventive treatment. e data also highlights signi cant issues with the public dental workforce, with the number of clinicians declining by 21.6 FTE sta over the past 6 months, representing 6% of the workforce. “We have raised concerns during stalled enterprise bargaining negotiations last year about issues relating to recruitment and retention of dentists. It is vital that the Victorian Government addresses these

workforce issues as a matter of urgency to ensure that we have a strong public dental sector so that vulnerable Victorians can access necessary care.” Oral health is fundamental to overall health, wellbeing, and quality of life, and a healthy mouth enables people to eat, speak and socialise without pain, discomfort or embarrassment. Dental diseases lead to pain, discomfort and tooth loss, and can lead to di culties with chewing, swallowing and speech. Poor oral health can lead to problems with nutrition and general health, disruptions to sleep and productivity and can be a barrier to full participation in society including the ability to gain employment. ere are also links between poor oral health and general diseases including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. “It’s also important for people to prioritise their oral health,” said A/Prof Shnider. “If you have delayed your dental visit because of the pandemic, now is the time to make that appointment for a check up. e Bisco experience at Schaumburg

I llinois, Chicago is one of those milestone events in your life, never to be forgotten. In mid-July 2023, the team at Amalgadent Dental and one lucky Australian dentist, Dr Annie Tong, embarked on a learning adventure that would bond us forever. Flyingtwentyhours fromMelbourne,we arrived late Friday evening to a downpour in Chicago. Fortunately, it cleared up to a perfect Chicago summer day. We spent the Saturday and Sunday exploring the city before going to Schaumburg, the home of Bisco. Over the course of three days, we attended lectures and participated in physical laboratory testing of materials. ese sessions were conducted by: u e very humble Dr Byoung Suh, Founder and President of Bisco Dental products. u Dr Rolando Nunez, Director of Clinical A airs u Dr Erick Yu, Manager of Research and Development Technology u Dr Qiang Ma, Research Scientist u Dr Joseph Kim, Clinical Advisor We were rst greeted at the hotel by David Han, our most gracious and accommodating host. He was then followed by more of the Bisco family, Flemming Poulson, International Sales Manager and Terri from reception. ey all made us feel welcome and at home as we focused on the science behind the Bisco Dental product range. We learnt of the extensive science behind the customer service team. ey were able to eld every query with their vast knowledge in general and more speci cally the Bisco products range. Despite Rolando’s cowboy hat and rubber ducky shirt, Rolando could not disguise his professionalism and expertise

in the eld of Biomaterials and Research and Development. If anything, it further ampli ed his passion and die-hard belief in his work. He was at home and in his element sharing his knowledge and research ndings. Dr Suh also lectured us, more speci cally on the following topics: u About his new project, rewriting his Principals of Adhesion Dentistry. It will include the latest up to date technology and state of the art research. u Developing ethical, sound experiments in the lab. u e art of troubleshooting Zirconia bonding. u Breaking though the misconceptions of current adhesive protocols across the multitudes of substrates, whilst achieving biocompatibility e team approach demonstrated

between Dr Suh and his exemplary sta , constantly striving to “bridge thedisconnect between science and clinicians” was evident. We donned full PPE as we entered the lab. We were surrounded by high tech testing and experimental equipment. is gave us a fuller appreciation of the length of time it takes to “calibrate” the team for the utmost uniformity in testing. What astounded me the most was the dedication of everyone on the team. “If Dr Suh says do it again … you do it again. Over and over, again” said Dr Rolando amidst the high-tech equipment technology. Rolando emphasised core principles: “Respect and Honour. Believe that the data is valuable.” Over dinner we shared a never-ending menu, owing with beer and a Shandy or two. Dr Suh announced that the “Aussies were too loud,” whilst the Aussies declared the rowdy Venezuelan on the table was to blame. Many laughs were had and more

New friendships formed with the other attendees from around the world, including researchers, dentists and dental sales teams like ourselves. e atmosphere was full of warmth and shared respect. We all felt privileged to have been exposed to so much talent and meeting so many inspirational people. is brought home for us the essence of what truly makes dentistry even greater today. Over half of Australians haven’t visited a dentist in the past year u e latest research from Compare the Market found that, on average, Australians paid $271.68 out of pocket for their last dental appointment. u General dental is the most used health insurance extras inclusion, with 47.6% of policyholders stating it’s their most used extras service.

“An extras policy is a great way to save on many out-of-hospital services that Medicare typically does not pay a bene t for. With the cost-of-living climbing, it’s important to ensure you are getting great value out of your extras policy. If you are paying for services you don’t use, or not satis ed with your returns, then it’s time to wake up to waste and compare your options,” Ms Hambilton said. “Depending on your health fund and level of extras cover, you may even be entitled to have your teeth cleaned with no out-of-pocket costs by visiting an eligible dentist. “With Dental Health Week here, it’s a good reminder of how important it is to look after your oral hygiene. “Iwouldadvise anyonewhohasn’t been to the dentist in at least the past 12 months to bite the bullet and book themselves in a general check-up and a clean. A bright smile could do wonders for your health.” u

W ith Dental Health Week underway, it’s a timely reminder of the value we should be putting into our oral health, especially considering how much dental health can a ect our overall health. Yet despite many of us being told to brush and oss twice a day from a young age, as well as getting annual dental check-ups, recent research from Compare the Market shows over half of Australians (51.5%) surveyed haven’t visited the dentist in the past year. Following up on this initial nding, Compare the Market asked over 1,000 Australians aged 18 and over about their dental health and found that the average Australian spent $271.68 out of pocket for their last dental visit.* e survey data also revealed that 53.3% of those previous dental visits were for general check-ups with a scale and clean, while another 11.8% went in for simple llings. Spokesperson for Compare the Market, Chris Ford spoke about the importance of good dental hygiene and how bad dental health could contribute to poorer health overall. “It’s surprising to see that over half of Australians have not visited a dentist in the past year, given how much of our overall bodily health could be in uenced just by what’s going in our mouth, especially if you don’t keep your teeth and gums clean,” Mr Ford said. “From in ammation of the heart

linings to respiratory diseases, the risk of these illnesses could be heightened by bad oral hygiene. “And while theremay be a stigma of fear surrounding a visit to the dentist, people should have more to fear about not booking a visit to the dentist, as many of these ailments could be prevented or treated through early detection.” e survey data found that a third (32.7%) of respondents don’t have an extras policy. As for those who had an extras policy, general dental was the most used inclusion (47.6%), followed by optical (29.9%). Compare the Market’s Head of Health Insurance, Lana Hambilton, spoke about how a private health insurance policy with extras can contribute towards the cost of some out-of-hospital services that Medicare might not pay a bene t for.

Making the bone harvesting a handy procedure

Micross: a minimally invasive disposable device indicated for cortical bone harvesting. The excellent cutting performance, due to its outstanding micro-blade, allows for an easy collection of autologous bone, even in narrow and hard-to- reach areas. This harvesting technique warrants the best preservation of cell vitality of the cortical tissue, a fundamental characteristic for the best graft integration. The only instrument for the Tunnel harvesting technique Micross is the only bone harvesting device specifically studied for tunnel surgical techniques that minimise post operation discomfort. The external diameter of the cannula is 5mm and due to its particular shape the

instrument can be inserted in tissue tunnels in the intraoral area as the external oblique line, the cortical palatine and the zygomatic process.
