David Petrikas and Professor Daniele Cardaropoli – President of the Giuseppe Cardaropoli Foundation for Research and Care in Periodontology

“What we know in Europe should also be known in the Asia Paci c and the Americas. In Europe we are close by to the companies who are introducing these products, so we know about them before other countries, and it is up to us to spread the knowledge to the international dental community.” Prof Cardaropoli said thanks to the availability of new products, such as Geistlich Fibro-Gide® and Geistlich Mucograft® collagen matrix and with the correct use of Geistlich Bio-Oss®, problems of bone resorption and soft tissue recession could be largely overcome. “With Geistlich Bio-Oss® we have the potential for perfect healing. Bio-Oss® alone is not enough, but Bio-Oss® and analogous bone is the ideal grafting combination to encourage osteoblastic activity and maintain long term vertical and horizontal bone volume and regeneration. “Together with soft tissuemanagement,

this combination is the perfect recipe to harness natural growth factors to encourage osteoblasts and also vascularisation and broblasts to regenerate soft tissue and avoid recession and improve post-implant recovery. “ e challenge for us is that 50 years ago we knew about osseointegration, followed by bone regeneration and now we are moving into the area of soft tissue and its importance. “It is a relatively new frontier to be able to customise the treatment plan according to the patient’s needs and to the capability of the patient’s individual healing starting with blood clotting and natural soft and hard tissue regeneration together with the biomaterials which greatly increase the success rates of this process. “But the results from the same hands and the same products may di er from those of other practitioners using the products without the same level of knowledge and expertise, so while dentists can do more and more implant work in the surgery these days, probably around 25 35% of cases still need specialist treatment.” Prof Cardaropoli said generally speaking, dentists are not trained in the speci c techniques that are more common to medicine and general surgery and the work done by periodontists. “My aim is to share the knowledge and enable more dentists to be skilled up to their full ability and potential. ere is no reason why dentists in Australia could not use the newest products and techniques in the same way as their peers in Europe and achieve the same levels of success. “I am very encouraged by what I

have seen in Australia, and I believe more dentists can bene t from this type of training to improve their skills and knowledge and help their patients achieve better outcomes.” To that end, Prof Cardaropoli is hosting a three-day international course (in English) at the renowned ProEd Professional Educational centre in his hometown of Torino over three days from 18–20 April 2024. e three-day course will include live surgeries, hands-on practical workshops, videos, and detailed slides and supporting notes for course participants. It will be a much more in-depth program than the one-day ‘taster’ course in Sydney which included some components of the international course such as using pig jaws to learn and practice the bone harvesting and bone and soft tissue augmentation techniques. Prof Cardaropoli said the intensive three-day course would be a major step in helping dental practitioners improve their knowledge and expertise, allowing them to treat a large number of patients. It would also introduce course participants to the latest range of Geistlich biomaterials to support these procedures. “Of course an added attraction is to enjoy the Italian culture of Torino, which was Italy’s rst historic capital, and the wine and food of the Piedmont region in addition to the course and the international teaching facilities o ered as part of the program.” u
